If you ever have the need to resize your partitions but don’t want to pay for a copy of PartitionMagic- check out a great freeware tool called GParted. Maybe you want to remove that D:\ that your PC came installed with and put everything on C:\ in one big partition, or maybe you want to keep your OS volume separate from your data files. GParted can quickly and easily assist you with any of your partition needs.

I’ve used this app twice now and both times its worked great. Of course whenever you are dealing with modifying your partition tables you must be VERY CAREFUL or you can easily wipe out everything with the wrong click of a mouse. But if you have some basic understanding and knowledge of how disk partitioning works, you should be fine.

Here are the very basic steps:

  1. Download the latest GParted software from Sourceforge.net
  2. Burn to CD
  3. Reboot your machine with the GParted CD inserted in your drive
  4. GParted should load up after a few basic setup questions
  5. Make the appropriate partition changes and apply
  6. Reboot and after a standard CHKDSK runs you should be set

Of course those were very basic instructions, for more details and pretty pictures, check out this tutorial on HowToForge.com.
