Two Book Reviews: The Overlook and Deceit
June 9th, 2008 by jay
So I’ve been reading a lot of non-fiction lately, but while on vacation to Costa Rica I decided to lighten things up and go for some fun summer fiction. So I brought The Overlook by Michael Connelly and Spy by Ted Bell. Notice something? Yep in the title of this post I say nothing about Spy. Well that’s because I dropped the dang book in the toilet about one week into the trip and 200 pages into the book. Although the toilet was clean (oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one) I have a big germ thing so there was no chance I was touching that book again. Thus I had to buy a book while there which was an event itself, but that’s a whole other story.
So for fiction book reviews I probably am not going to write too much really. I mean you can click the link and read what the book is about, no? So it’ll be pretty short. I’ll start with The Overlook which I really enjoyed. It’s nothing too deep just a book about a LAPD detective that is working against time and federal agencies to solve a very important case. It’s the equivalent to a summer popcorn type movie. Fun stuff and Connelly is a gifted writer, I’ve yet to read a book of his that I didn’t enjoy.
The book I purchased in Costa Rica, Deceit was also pretty good but not as fun.
It’s written by James Siegel who also wrote Derailed which you may recognize as a novel turned movie starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Anistan. Deceit was the first book I’ve read from Siegel and I’m curious if he writes them all from a first person, I’m talking TO you perspective as this one was. I’m not overly fond of this style (Catcher in the Rye excluded) but you get used to it. My biggest problem is that the book wasn’t too much of a barn burning page turner. Pace was decent and I was never bored, but never really got to that “OMG I can’t wait to turn the page” moment.
I finished a nutrition book right after I returned so I’ll put that up soon.
